Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra

East of the Sun

August 30, 2022 at 7:30 pm
The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra featuring the Sadler Sisters on vocals

Written by Brooks Bowman in 1924 for the musical “Stags at Bay”, East of the Sun (and West of the Moon) has become one of the most cherished selections in the jazz repertoire, having been recorded by dozens of artists over a period of nine decades. The title—traced back to Norwegian fairy tale—provides a perfect caption for this concert’s revue of beloved standards, including Cheek to Cheek, But Not For Me, All of Me and Antônio Carlos Jobim’s Corcovado. It also affords the WJO an opportunity to showcase a premiere collaboration with two of Winnipeg’s up-and-coming vocal jazz stars—The Sadler Sisters. Elizabeth and Ashleigh—both graduates of the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music—love to sing. Although their personalities may differ, they share many common musical influences and tastes. Early on, they were encouraged to follow musical interests by their closely-knit family and sung in choirs throughout childhood. Fast forward to the present, The Sadler Sisters perform a mixture of pop covers and jazz standards, wowing audiences with their silky voices, irresistible harmonies, and captivating stage presence. Please join the WJO for a late-summer evening of jazz classics with The Sadler sisters.

The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, now in its 25th Anniversary Season, presents an eight-concert season of Big Band music in 2022-2023. Its expanding roster boasts over 25 Winnipeg-based musicians whose combined resumes touch every corner of performance jazz locally, nationally, and around the world. WJO’s popularity has grown steadily over the course of the band’s history, from small, informal events in 1997 to a seven-concert season and sold-out performances at various venues around Winnipeg and in outlying communities.

Commissioning new works and connecting with and inspiring students and young musicians is an integral part of the WJO vision. The WJO’s mission is to lead an ever-expanding and advancing program of big band performance, composition and education.

Slow Train Home

Slow Train Home

The late summer humdinger with the marvelous minstrels of mirth.

SLOW TRAIN HOME

Slow Train Home is an original alt-country music project imagined by singer songwriter Tod Hughes who hails from Winnipeg, Calgary (27 years), and Winnipeg again.  The name is inspired by the long journey home to the heart of the Canadian prairies over way more years than was ever planned.  Also, it is inspired by the music of the road of life and the journey through time as much as the distance traveled.

Hughes is joined on the Train by legendary Winnipeg producer, engineer, musician, songwriter Chris Brett who has been part of some of the biggest bands and albums to come out of Winnipeg over the years.  CB plays lead guitar, sings and acts as music director in the band.

Also on board the Train is Cary Bilcowski AKA Sgt. Bilco, a multi instrumentalist singer/songwriter born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Cary plays bass, baritone guitar and sings with STH.

Donovan Locken is a super talented multi-instrumentalist (and carpenter!) who plays mandolin and sings in STH.

Drummer, Jaime Carrasco lays down the beat to hold the whole thing together.

The music is soulful, thoughtful, toe tapping and memorable.

Winnipeg Summer Dance Collective

Winnipeg Summer Dance Collective

Made up of professional ballet dancers tied to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Summer Dance Collective seeks to make dance more accessible in Downtown Winnipeg through pop-up performances. For the past four years they have created and taken dance from concrete to the Concert Hall, and everything in between. Find out where their next show is happening @summerdancecollective.

This evening will feature new commissioned works from WSDC Resident Choreographer Bryce Taylor and choreographer Julianne Chartier. A regular breaker, Bryce (they/them) have also danced professionally for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and join us direct from Ballet Edmonton. They meld contemporary, ballet, and hip hop influences into a smooth, vibrant style. Recently, you might have caught them teaching masterclasses as part of Equal-Eyes Art Constellation. Julianne Chartier (she/her) is a rising talent on the Winnipeg choreography scene. We look forward to presenting a new solo and duo from her rep! Featuring the dancers Chloe Bennett and Irene Blanc Zoco.

Proudly supported by Downtown Winnipeg Biz, the Manitoba Arts Council, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
