Beer School Lesson 2: The Role of Hops

The second lesson will discuss the use of hops. Hops have been used in beer for hundreds of years.

Why?

What is a hop anyway?

Are other things used in place of hops?

We'll discuss the role hops plays in beer production and storage. We'll discuss why the use of hops has increased recently. We'll dig a bit into the history of high hop beer and wonder if the stories are even true!

What is an India Pale Ale?

Is Alexander Keith's IPA really an IPA?

What the heck is a NEIPA?

We'll discuss the difference between an IPA, a East/West Coast IPA, a New England IPA. We'll discuss the creation of the APA and the most recently created styles: Hazy/Juicy Pale Ales.

By the end of the lesson you'll be able to spot the differences between all of the above styles. You'll feel confident in knowing if a beer will be right for you based on what's printed on the label.

If we have time, we'll dig a little deeper.

What in the world is a milkshake IPA??

Depending on what's available on the day of the lesson you'll taste 6-8 beers. 32 oz. total. There will also be snacks provided.
